Push press

  • Intermediate
  • Barbell

Short leg dip and drive, lock out overhead

Muscles worked

Primary:
Shoulders
Secondary:
Triceps, Quads

How to do it

  1. With the bar on your shoulders, dip slightly at the knees keeping your torso vertical.
  2. Drive hard through your legs and use that momentum to press the bar overhead.
  3. Lock out, then lower the bar to your shoulders under control.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping into a deep squat instead of a short dip.
  • Pushing your hips back and tilting your torso.

Tips

  • Moves more weight than the strict press and overloads the lowering.
  • Soften your knees as the bar returns to absorb it.
