High step-up

  • Basic
  • Box or step
  • Unilateral

Whole foot on the box, rise without bouncing

Muscles worked

Primary:
Quads
Secondary:
Glutes

How to do it

  1. Place one whole foot on a box high enough to leave your thigh near horizontal.
  2. Drive up with that leg only, without pushing off the bottom foot.
  3. Lower under control, touching down with the toes first.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing off with the floor foot.
  • Letting your heel hang off the box.

Tips

  • The higher the box, the more glute is involved.
  • Go up slowly and down even slower: that's where the work is.

Variations

The same exercise with different equipment, grip or setup.
