Upright row

  • Barbell

Elbows above wrists; stop at the collarbone

Muscles worked

Primary:
Traps
Secondary:
Shoulders

How to do it

  1. Stand holding the weight in front with a slightly narrower-than-shoulder grip.
  2. Pull up driving the elbows high to chest/chin level.
  3. Lower under control.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling too high and impinging the shoulder.
  • Using a too-narrow grip.
  • Pushing through shoulder pain: it is one of the most irritating lifts; swap it for lateral raises.

Tips

  • Keep the elbows above the wrists.
  • Do not pull above the collarbone if the shoulder bothers you.

Variations
